Curiosity is perhaps the single most compelling characteristic that unites the most fascinating people in the world. These are the people whose interests make them interesting. They always want to know more, achieve more and more often than not, they succeed at it, like many other things. Tanuja Gomes is a member of this no-blinkers-on club.
Over the course of a chilly Wednesday afternoon at the Tanuja’s Bandra office, our conversation veers from working mothers and family to travel, wellness and, of course, fashion. Tanuja has been at the helm of Furtados- a name that is synonymous to music in India, expanding the business through Furtados School of Music (FSM) and High, both revolutionizing the music space in the country. An ex-banker with 18 years of experience working for blue chip banks like HSBC and Barclays, its Tanuja’s ability to deep dive and turn all that she touches into a prodigious success that makes her the poster girl for what women are truly capable of doing when their passions are aligned with their purpose. At the moment, though, she is content with what’s on her plate. But that’s not to say she’s sitting still. With managing two businesses and her daughter, she’s constantly thinking about what’s next for her. “Right now, it’s our tie up with the Berklee School of Music which will be a game changer. Our newest app for High was successful too. It’s all about adapting to the new trends but we’ve also stuck to our roots.”
The same thought reflects in Tanuja’s fashion. You can always count on her to make a sartorial statement, and she’s unapologetic about her love for good clothes. Today, for example, she’s dressed in a chic saree with a statement neckpiece. “I often stick to sarees or a blouse and skirt for work. It’s comfortable and easy to experiment with. As for the accessories I usually go for a professional looking handbag that I can carry every day and a statement neckpiece.” Tanuja’s excitement about the experimental fashion space and the direction towards which it’s heading is infectious.
We spend almost an hour discussing couture, bags and more bags. She knows exactly what she wants and isn’t afraid to ask for it. But it’s her modesty, abhorrence of failure, persistent curiosity and the sheer warmth she exudes that make her the quintessential role model for a multi-hyphenate success.
