Dance of the dragon, Sassoon dock art festival

Having lived in Mumbai for decades, Sassoon docks is, or rather was, unknown to majority of the residents of the city. And rightfully so. A place that witnesses the chaotic sight of a thousand fishermen unloading their catch of the day at the dock and smells of fish constantly isn’t exactly the same as a dinner at an ambient restaurant or a stroll across an elegant art gallery. But put together a group of brilliant artists, some of the most unusual but awe inspiring installations and colours, lots and lots of colours, and the picture changes completely. Start India Movement’s installations at Sassoon docks are testament to the fact that art has the power to turn things around and make you look at even the most unusual of things with a relatable perspective. A warehouse filled with beautiful installations and abstract scenery floor after floor has quickly become the city’s weekend go to. Take a stroll here on a Saturday evening and you will see a swarm of crowd excited to see the city’s most inspiring before/after story. But the installations aren’t the only work of art you’ll find here. Sat in the small makeshift  galleria with a cup of Blue Tokai coffee in one hand and a notebook in another, curiously sketching line after line of what looks like a masterpiece in making, a bunch of budding artists have found a home in this place. The air here will dare you to do things differently. Wear kurtas with ripped jeans. Traditional jhumkas with a pair of converse. Complement your tattoos with a small bindi on your forehead. Choose a double shot espresso over a cappuccino.
